Overall: WLS (ABC O&O) maintained a small lead in Chicago over the last 30 days with a 33.8 Share overall while WFLD (Fox O&O) improved their overall Share by +5.8% compared to the 30 days prior to finish second with a 31.3 Share. WGN (Tribune-owned independent station) was third with a 21.9 Share. WLS was No. 1 as a group on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and the station’s main account was the No. 1 individual account on all three platforms.
There was actually no movement in the overall station rankings at all over the last 30 days, with the seven stations Share Rocket tracks in the market all holding steady in their positions. The biggest percentage change in Share in the last 30 days in the market was WGBO (Univision O&O), which improved by +9.7% after seeing +13.4% more Engagement than in the 30 days prior.
Some additional observations from our data:
On Facebook, the fight between WLS and WFLD for first was even closer than the overall rankings. WLS had a 33.2 Share as a group on the platform compared to a 32.8 Share for WFLD. WLS’s main station Facebook Page was responsible for 29.8 of their Share on the platform, while WFLD’s main Page accounted for 28.8 of its total Facebook Share. However, WFLD’s Jenny Milkowski helped to close the difference. She was the No. 1 individual in the market on Facebook with a 1.93 Share and generated more than 200,000 Engagements on the platform in the last 30 days. WGN’s Morning News Facebook Page was the No. 1 sub-brand in the market with a 1.28 Share. The largest Facebook Page in the market is WLS’s main station Page, which has nearly 2 million followers.
On Twitter, WLS had a 35.8 Share as a group followed by WGN with a 32.0 Share. IN the last 30 days, WMAQ (NBC O&O) moved into third on the platform with a 13.7 Share. WGN’s main station Twitter account had a 10.3 Share, but the station had four of the top five individuals in the market on the platform, including No. 1 Jarrett Payton (3.24 Share on Twitter), No. 3 Mike Hamernik (2.06 Share), No. 4 Ben Bradley (1.74 Share), and No. 5 Tom Skilling (1.64 Share).
On Instagram, WLS dominated with a 45.7 Share as a group thanks to nearly 220,000 Engagements over the past 30 days. WLS’s main station account generated about 33.7 of that Share. They also had the No. 1 individual on Instagram in the market in meteorologist Cheryl Scott (5.29 Share on the platform). WGN was second with a 22.6 Share as a group, followed by WGBO with a 12.0 Share. Fourth-place WMAQ nearly doubled its main station account’s Share score on Insta over the last 30 days.
Among individuals overall, Milkowski led the way with a 1.75 Share, followed by a couple of WGBO talents, Ericka Pino (0.85 Share) and Ericka Maldonado (0.72 Share). WFLD’s Natalie Bomke more than doubled her Engagement compared to 30 days prior, which increased her overall Share by +77.2% in the last month.
Of the top 10 individuals in the market overall, four are with WGN, three are with WFLD, two are with WGBO, and one is with WLS.
